On Sunday, Congress ordered an investigation into the incident of a party worker who was mistreated by her colleagues at a meeting in Deoria after she alleged that a “rapist” had obtained the ticket for the by-elections of the assembly. Two party members were also expelled for “indiscipline”. The president of the National Commission for Women (NCW), Rekha Sharma, said that she has written to the Director General of Police of Uttar Pradesh to request strict action against the accused.
The woman, Tara Yadav, filed a police complaint against four party officials, including the district president, for allegedly beating and abusing her. When videos of the gruesome scenes from Saturday’s meeting went viral, provoking outrage, an embarrassed state unit of Congress called it a “political conspiracy” to smear the party. According to eyewitnesses, Yadav allegedly tried to “mistreat” the party secretary, Sachin Naik, and also threw a bouquet at him during the meeting on Saturday.
Yadav was protesting the party’s nomination of Mukund Bhaskar Mani for the November 3 general election, accusing him of being a rapist, a charge he denied. While throwing a bouquet at Sachin Naik, angry workers allegedly mistreated Yadav and dragged her away from the meeting site, witnesses claimed.
“A police report has been received. The matter is being investigated. However, so far no cases have been recorded,” said SHO Kotwali Chandrabhan Singh. Yadav, who claimed to be associated with the party for four years, said she was only questioning the candidate’s choice and never expected party members to react in such a way.
“You have given the ticket to a rapist and this has tarnished the image of Congress. You could have given the ticket to someone else. Saying this, someone pushed me from behind. Can I not even make my point?” These people want destroy Congress and put an end to it, “Yadav said. In a statement issued on Sunday, the UP Congress said:” In the context of the by-elections to the Deoria assembly constituency, a meeting was held on October 10 at the party office in Deoria. At this meeting, Deendayal Yadav and Ajay Kumar Sainthwar incurred indiscipline and has been expelled from the party with immediate effect. “” The incident is a political conspiracy to smear the Congress party, “he said, adding that an investigative committee has been formed. of three members on the directives of the head of the UP Congress, Ajay Kumar Lallu. The committee will present its report to Lallu within three days. In a video message, the director of NCW, Rekha Sharma, regretted that such incidents discourage women from joining politics.
“A woman in a political meeting was being mistreated. Knowing this, I have written to the UP DGP asking for strict action against the accused.” We want women to join politics, but if these kinds of incidents happen, how will we do it? empower women and motivate them to join politics. I call on the UP police to arrest the accused as soon as possible, “said Sharma.
