Rajasthan’s Congress is ahead of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in elections to 50 urban local bodies in 12 districts of the state whose results were released on Sunday.
The results come days after the BJP performed better than Congress in rural local body elections in 21 of the state’s 33 districts.
The results of the urban local bodies show that independents will be the leaders in the formation of boards in most of the districts.
Out of 1,775 municipal districts, results for 1,774 were declared on Sunday; Congress has bagged 619, independents 597, BJP 547 and the rest others.
Prime Minister Ashok Gehlot congratulated all the candidates for Congress. He said in a tweet: “I thank all the citizens who showed their trust in Congress and for what the party won. I thank all the workers in Congress. Thanks to your hard work, the party has won. “
The president of the state of Congress, Govind Singh Dotasra, said that of 50, his party will form boards of directors in at least 41 councils. “As part of the strategy, Congress has placed independents in many seats to defeat the BJP who had the misconception that they are the urban party. The last time, out of 50, they formed a board in 34. But this time they cannot form a board in more than nine councils, ”he said.
BJP spokesman Mukesh Pareekh said it is too early to say who will form how many boards. “In local elections, the law against desertion is not applicable and in 35 percent of the seats, the independents have won. Time will tell who will form how many boards, ”he said.

Analysis of the results shows that in Jaipur, out of 10 municipal councils, Congress will succeed in forming boards of directors in six municipalities, including Chomu, Bagru, Shahpura and Virat Nagar.
In Bharatpur, independents have dominated the polls. Out of 255 districts, independent councilors won 187 seats; BJP obtained 45, Congress 22 and BSP 1.
Independents in the Dholpur city council also ruined the math for Congress and the BJP. Both parties obtained 22 seats each, while the independents obtained 15 seats. Congress will form a board in Rajkheda Township. Congress won 20 seats and the BJP was reduced to 11.
In the Sawai Madhopur municipal council, Congress won 27, BJP 22, and Independents 10. Independents won 60 seats in Gangapur city municipality, BJP 27, and Congress 21.
In Sri Ganganagar, elections were held for eight municipalities in which the Congress won four and the BJP two. The Congress, which was able to form a board in two municipalities in the last elections, this time obtained an absolute majority in four municipalities: Kesarisinghpur, Srikaranpur, Padampur and Gajsinghpura. The BJP, which formed boards of directors in 6 municipalities in the last elections, won the majority in Anupgarh and Sadulshahar.
The vote to elect the representatives of 1,775 districts in 50 municipal bodies took place on December 11. Amid Covid-19 restrictions in the state, a voter turnout of 79.90 percent was recorded.
The highest turnout, 90.32 percent, was recorded in the Nagar municipal body of Bharatpur. The lowest participation, 64.39 percent, was recorded in Sawai Madhopur Nagar Parishad. Out of 14.35,000 voters in 12 districts, 11.46,000 voted on Friday.
Congress had suffered a setback in the elections to Rajasthan’s rural body. Elections for the seats of Panchayat Samiti and Zila Parishad were recently held in 21 of the state’s 33 districts. Of the 4,371 seats in the Samiti panchayat, the BJP won 1,989 and the Congress 1,852. The new members will elect heads of panchayat samitis. Of the 636 seats of Zila Parishad (district council), the BJP won 353 and Congress 252.
Political experts believe that, one day after the ruling Congress was shocked in the elections of Panchayati Raj and Zila Parishad, the results of urban local bodies have saved up appearances for the party, which won the majority of seats , pressuring the BJP. in the third position and the independents in the second position.
The results come as a surprise to many as urban voters have placed their faith in the Congress party, which is contrary to the general trend where urban voters are seen to lean toward the BJP and rural voters toward Congress.
