Congress holds a rally in support of Rhea Chakraborty in Kolkata

The Congress of West Bengal, the home state of actress Rhea Chakraborty, held a rally today in support of the actress who has been indicted in an alleged drug-related case linked to the death of her friend and actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
The protest to show support for Ms. Chakraborty adds to the political dispute over the case. Bihar’s chief minister, Nitish Kumar, had been instrumental in asking the center to allow the Central Bureau of Investigation to take over the case from the Mumbai police, after the Rajput family in Bihar submitted a first information report. in Patna against Mrs. Chakraborty.
The ruling alliance in Maharashtra, where the BJP is in opposition, had defended the Mumbai police investigation and responded to allegations of weak investigation.
“Political conspiracy and vindictive behavior against Rhea Chakraborty, Bengal’s daughter, will not be tolerated,” Congress tweeted today.
“The protest rally was held from the provincial congressional office to the Wellington crossing on the instructions of Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, president of the West Bengal Congress,” the party tweeted.
Ms. Chakraborty is in Mumbai Byculla Jail for now. A court rejected bail on Friday after hearing arguments from the actor and the Bureau of Narcotics Control (NCB), the agency that arrested her while investigating the drug charges.
The ruling NDA in Bihar on Tuesday had said the NCB’s arrest of Chakraborty was “an important step” in the direction of securing justice for the Patna-born actor, whose death has struck a chord with the people of the state.
