Mumbai:
A civic-run hospital in Mumbai, Maharashtra, has been accused of handing over a patient’s body to the wrong family, after which actual family members created an uproar at the facility.
The 26-year-old’s family also alleged that his kidney was removed during the autopsy.
The confusion occurred at the Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital on Sunday, after which two members of his morgue staff were suspended and an investigation into the matter was launched, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said today.
“Strict action will be taken against the culprits,” said the BMC, while dismissing the accusation that the man’s kidney was removed.
On Sunday, Sion Hospital handed over the body of Ankush Sarvade, who died of his injuries while undergoing treatment after a traffic accident, to the family of another patient, Hemant Digambar.
According to the BMC, Ankush Sarvade was admitted to Sion Hospital on August 28 after a traffic accident and was on life support after an operation. He died of his injuries Sunday morning.

Meanwhile, Hemant Digambar was “taken dead” to hospital on August 12, he said.
Sion Hospital performed an autopsy on both bodies on Sunday and the bodies were kept in the morgue of the medical facility, the BMC said in a statement.
Hemant Digambar’s relatives misidentified Ankush Sarvade’s body and completed all due procedures, including a “police signature,” the civic body said.
The mistake came to light when Ankush Sarvade’s relatives came to collect his body. However, at the time, Hemant Digamber’s family had held the funeral, he said.
Ankush Sarvade’s relatives began to protest at the hospital, but the police intervened and controlled the situation, the civic body said.
