Patna:
The newly formed assembly in Bihar is set to witness its first test of strength with the ruling NDA and the opposition Grand Alliance on Tuesday by presenting their respective candidates for the Speaker post.
The election for the position is scheduled for Wednesday and, according to Vidhan Sabha’s secretariat, the nominations have been submitted by BJP leader Vijay Kumar Sinha, on behalf of the NDA, and Awadh Bihari Chaudhary of RJD, who is the candidate of the opposition coalitions of five parties.
Speaking to reporters after Awadh Bihari Chaudhary submitted his nominations, RJD de facto leader Tejashwi Yadav said: “We have taken the first step. Our candidate submitted his nomination papers long before the NDA decided on his nominee. I hope our nominee wins. ” .
Tejashwi Yadav noted that Awadh Bihari Chaudhary is a fifth-term member of the MLA, a member of this house since the 1980s, knows the procedures well with an excellent command of our language and has a reputation for taking everyone with us.
In short, all the qualities you would expect from a Speaker montage. When it was pointed out that according to the convention, the ruling alliance presents its candidate and receives the unanimous support of all, Tejashwi Yadav responded with irritation “the convention also says that the opposition has its nominee appointed for the vice president position. It is true for the assemblies as well as the Lok Sabha. ” However, in the previous assembly, we continued requesting the same thing but the position was vacant ”.
Deputy Chief Minister Tar Kishor Prasad told reporters: “We call on the opposition to adhere to tradition and support our candidate for the position of Spokesperson. The spokesperson belongs to the entire House and not just to the ruling dispensation. “.
Vijay Kumar Sinha, who was a minister in the previous Nitish Kumar government, deeply thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister of the Interior Amit Shah “for placing their trust in me and showing, once again, that in the BJP a common worker can scale great heights. “.
This is the first time since the JD (U) -BJP alliance came to power in 2005 that the saffron party has claimed the position of Spokesperson. The BJP, which had previously played a minor role in the Chief Ministers party, surpassed JD (U) in assembly polls, winning more than 30 more seats than the latter.
BJP won a total of 74 seats in recently concluded state polls, while the JD (U) count dropped to 43.
While the saffron party chose to keep its pre-election promise to back Nitish Kumar as chief minister, even if the JD (U) performed poorly, the BJP appears to have extracted its pound of meat by insisting on having its own president and also in getting away with the lions share in the council of ministers.
However, Sinha’s candidacy has come as a surprise as until recently the name of Nand Kishore Tejashwi Yadav, a multi-term MLA and former minister, was circulating.
Meanwhile, Asaduddin Owaisis AIMIM indicated that it could re-queer the tone of the Grand Alliance, after damaging it in the assembly elections.
“For the election of the Speaker, the decision must be unanimous and such contests must be avoided. Upon witnessing the unfortunate disputes, we had decided on the field our own candidate as well, as now it seems to be a place without limits competition,” said the president from the AIMIM estate, Akhtarul Iman.
Akhtarul Iman, who is one of five MLAs in the party led by the passionate Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, added that “we were unable to present our candidate as the deadline for Tuesday had passed by noon. We will see what needs to be done tomorrow.
In the 243-member assembly, the NDA, which also includes pro-temporary President Jitan Ram Manjhis HAM and Minister Mukesh Sahni’s VIP, has 125 MLAs.
The Grand Alliance which is led by RJD and includes Congress, CPI (ML), CPI and CPI (M), has 109.
Additionally, the Mayawati BSP, which allied itself with AIMIM in the assembly polls, has one member. The LJP headed by Chirag Paswan, which has burned its bridges with Nitish Kumar for his belligerent stance against JD (U) in assembly polls has one member as well as one Independent.
The Independent MLA Sumit Singh recently met with the Chief Minister a week ago and assured him of his full support. The LJP, which pledges allegiance to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is unlikely to vote against the NDA candidate.
Meanwhile, proceedings at the assembly were postponed until Wednesday after the swearing in of all but two of the 243 newly elected members.
Anant Singh and Amarjeet Kushwaha of RJD and CPI (ML), respectively, could not be sworn in as they are both in jail in connection with criminal cases.
