Comedian Munawar Faruqui among 5 arrested for ‘indecent’ comments about Hindu deities

Munawar Faruqui, a comedian from Gujarat, was arrested along with four others after the son of an MLA BJP complained against him for alleged indecent remarks made against Hindu deities and Union Interior Minister Amit Shah during a show in Indore in Madhya Pradesh. a police officer said Saturday.

Police said the comedy show was held at a cafe in Indore’s Dukan area 56 on Friday.

Eklavya Singh Gaur (36), son of local BJP legislator Malini Laxman Singh Gaur, filed the complaint about it, police said.

Gaur said he and his associates had come to the show as an audience, where the comedian made the comments. They objected to his comments and created a scandal about it.

They also forced the event to stop.

“A case was filed late Friday night against comedian Munawar Faruqui, a resident of Junagadh in Gujarat, and four people based in Indore on the basis of a written complaint filed by Eklavya Singh Gaur, who also filed a controversial video of the comedy show, ”said Kamlesh Sharma, in charge of the Tukoganj Police Station.

“The five defendants were later arrested,” he said.

According to the complaint, indecent remarks were made against Hindu gods and goddesses and Union Interior Minister Amit Shah during the show, Sharma said.

Four other people arrested were identified as Edwin Anthony, Prakhar Vyas, Priyam Vyas and Nalin Yadav, police said.

All of them were registered under sections 295-A of the IPC (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious sentiments of any kind by insulting their religion or religious beliefs), section 269 (illegal or negligent act that can spread the infection of any disease dangerous life) and other relevant provisions.

Meanwhile, speaking to reporters, Gaur said: “After buying the tickets, my associates and I went to the comedy show, where Faruqui was acting as the lead comedian. The show mocked Hindu deities by passing indecent comments. The Godhra incident and the Union Interior Minister Amit Shah were also inappropriately mentioned during the show. “

“Such objectionable conversations took place during the comedy show. We made a video of them and stopped the show by pulling the audience out of the cafe. Then we caught the comedians and organizers of the show and took them to the Tukoganj police station, ”he said.

Gaur, who is also the coordinator of the local group Hind Rakshak, alleged that the instruction to maintain physical distance was also not followed during the comedy show and that it was organized without permission from the authorities.

At least 100 spectators were sitting in a small hallway at the cafe, he said.

Some media reports said that the comedian was also beaten by Hind Rakshak workers during the riot at the cafe.

However, Gaur denied the charges.
