A Gujarati comedian, along with four other organizers of the event, has been arrested for allegedly insulting religious beliefs and also the Union Minister of the Interior, Amit Shah, during a New Year’s show in Indore. The incident came to light when a group of Hindutva activists attended the event to monitor it and halted the process when the artist made the alleged undesirable references.
Munawar Faruqui, the comedian, was arrested on Friday for his performance at a café in the popular 56 Dukan town of Indore. The other arrested include Prakhar Vyas, Priyam Vyas, Nalin Yadav, and Inodre’s events coordinator Edwin Anthony.
“The arrested men have been booked under IPC sections 188, 269, 34 and 295A for organizing the event without permission, disobeying COVID-19 safety regulations and hurting religious sentiments,” said Kalmesh Sharma, in charge of the station. Tukoganj Police Station in Indore. .
The case was filed on the basis of a complaint from Eklavya Gaur, coordinator of Hind Rakshak Sangathan and son of BJP MLA Malini Gaur.
“Munawar Faruqui is a serial offender, who in the past has often denigrated Hindu god-goddesses in his shows. When we found out about the event … we also bought tickets … Those who performed there even made references mocking about Union Minister of the Interior Amit Shah and dragging his name into Godhra’s carnage, “Gaur said.
“We stopped the event immediately, drew the audience out, and took the artists and event organizers to the local police station.”
Gaur also posted a video of the comedy show, PTI reports say. Some media reports, according to PTI, said that Faruqui was beaten by Hind Rakshak Sangathan workers during the riot, although Gaur denied the allegation.
