CHENNAI: The Chennai subway train successfully carried out the diesel locomotive test on Saturday on the 9-kilometer extension section of phase 1 from Washermenpet to Wimco Nagar.
According to a CMRL statement, the test run traveled 9 kilometers up and down, stopping at eight metro stations (six elevated and two underground).
Currently, nearly 90 percent of the work on the phase 1 stretch has been completed and the line is expected to open to the public in January.

“Installation of various systems including ballastless track, overhead electrification, signage, tunnel ventilation, HVAC, platform screen doors and automatic toll collection doors is underway,” the statement said.
The Metro is also expected to give a green makeover to the middle lanes by planting various plants that would grow in the shade.
Once open, the six-kilometer elevated stretch of the nine-kilometer stretch will give travelers a view of Chennai’s north shore as they travel.
The Metro has also submitted bids for digital route display requirements to configure LCD televisions and audio systems for announcements on trains and stations.
The phase 1 extension was supposed to open in 2020, but construction work was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 10 more trains would be added for the extension, which is being built at a cost of Rs.3.77 billion.
