Prior to the state assembly elections, former Bihar Police Director-General Gupteshwar Pandey, who recently took voluntary retirement, joined Janata Dal (United) on Sunday at the supreme match and residence of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in Patna.

Pandey’s political leanings were indicated by his recent comments on the Sushant Singh Rajput case. He has criticized the Mumbai police on matters related to the investigation. He had also sparked controversy by saying that actress Rhea Chakraborty did not have the “stature” to comment on CM Nitish Kumar.

Pandey had applied for VRS prior to the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, but did not receive a ticket from the Buxar Lok Sabha seat. Then he had withdrawn his application for VRS.

Last week, his VRS application received swift approval from Governor Fagu Chauhan and an exception was made in his case with the exemption of a mandatory three-month reflection period for government officials to join the policy.

The Shiv Sena, who heads the ruling coalition in Maharashtra, had previously accused Pandey of acting as a “political pawn” for the ruling administration in Bihar ahead of the assembly elections.

Shiv Sena’s spokesman, Sanjay Raut, had also stated that he had a political agenda with his statements on the Mumbai case and that he will now receive his award.

The Bihar assembly elections will be held in three phases on October 28, November 3 and November 7, and the results will be declared on November 10, the tally day.
