Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday expressed concern over higher limits for admission to universities at the University of Delhi. CM Kejriwal further added that he has written to the Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank seeking amendments to the DU Law so that more colleges and universities can be established in the city.
Kejriwal said that more colleges and universities need to be opened in Delhi to provide higher education opportunities to students in Delhi.
“About 2.5 lakh of students in Delhi pass the 12th class board exams each year and of those, only 1.25 lakh get admission to the city’s universities,” Kejriwal said.
He said that there are 91 colleges and institutes affiliated with the University of Delhi, while IP University, which offers professional degrees, has 127 colleges and institutes.
He said that under Section 5 (2) of the DU Law, new universities established in the city will have to be affiliated with the University of Delhi.
In the past 30 years, DU has not affiliated with any new university, Kejriwal said, adding that it may be due to its full capacity.
Kejriwal said that he has requested the Union Minister of Education to amend Section 5 (2) of the DU Act so that more colleges and universities can be established in the city.
Earlier this week, the University of Delhi had announced its first cut-list for undergraduate admission with Lady Shri Ram College setting the total score at 100 percent for three honors courses.
