Dave Greenfield, the keyboardist for the British punk band The Stranglers and who wrote the music for his greatest success, Golden brown, died after testing positive for coronavirus. He was 71 years old.
The gang’s official website announced that Greenfield died Sunday after contracting the virus after a hospitalization for heart problems.
Bassist Jean-Jacques “JJ” Burnel paid tribute to Greenfield as a “musical genius” who had “passed away as one of the victims of the Great 2020 Pandemic”.
Hugh Cornwall, the band’s former lead singer, said on Twitter that “Greenfield’s musical ability and kind nature took an interesting turn for the band” and that “he must be remembered as the man who gave the world music of Golden brown“
Greenfield was known for its distinctive sound and playing style, using instruments such as the clavichord and the Hammond electric organ.
He joined the band in 1975, which subsequently became one of the most groundbreaking during Britain’s punk explosion in the late 1970s. He had recently postponed a farewell tour this summer due to the pandemic.
Greenfield is survived by his wife Pam.
