Chinese Soldier Captured in Ladakh, India Says He Will Be Returned | Pacific Asia

The Indian military says it detained a Chinese soldier after he crossed a de facto disputed border in the western Himalayan region, where both countries have amassed thousands of troops after a deadly clash in June.

The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) soldier was captured in the Demchok area of eastern Ladakh and would be returned after completing the formalities, the Indian army said in a statement on Monday.

“The PLA soldier has received medical assistance that includes oxygen, food and warm clothing to protect him from the vagaries of extreme altitude and harsh weather conditions,” the statement said.

The PLA has not yet issued a statement on the matter.

Nuclear-armed neighbors have been locked in a border confrontation for months in the Ladakh region, with troops killing each other in hand-to-hand combat and firing into the air.

The confrontation began in May and escalated in June to become the deadliest violence between the two sides in decades.

Twenty Indian soldiers were killed and dozens more were injured. China is also believed to have suffered casualties, but has not provided details.

After that clash, the two countries partially disassociated themselves from the site in Ladakh’s Galwan Valley and at least two other locations, but the crisis has continued in at least three other areas, including the glacier Lake Pangong.

Last month, the world’s two most populous nations accused each other of sending soldiers into each other’s territory in the Pangong area and firing warning shots for the first time in 45 years, raising the specter of a large-scale military conflict. .

But both sides have also held several rounds of military and diplomatic talks, although little progress has been made.
