Chinese factory draws criticism for hosting ‘Kissing Contest’ to celebrate reopening after shutdown

After spending days locked up, parts of China are slowly returning to normal life. Some, however, have been criticized for acting with too much callous enthusiasm.

After a relaxation of the closing restrictions recently, a factory in the southern part of the country held a strange ‘kissing contest’ to celebrate its reopening. However, the incident received much criticism on social media.

The furniture factory called ‘Yueva’ in Suzhou city reportedly invited 10 couples to kiss while maintaining a borderline ‘social distancing’. How? Well, putting a plexiglass barrier in the middle.

A video of the same thing shared on social media showed factor workers kissing through the glass layer, while others continued to cheer them on.

Ma, the factory owner, said the glass had been placed among the participants to minimize the risk of infection.

Ma’s reason for running the contest was to make sure all the factory workers are “happy.” He said: “Some of the participants were actually married couples working at the factory. This pandemic has made everyone very tense. They have not been able to relax, and that can cause errors in the production process.”

However, such activity generated strong criticism on social media, with people leaving the factory for allowing people to be so close even after Wuhan had become the epicenter of the coronavirus where the virus was first detected.
