Two Chinese People’s Liberation Army helicopters violated Indian airspace in eastern Ladakh on May 5 in the afternoon, around the same time when a senior army officer was airborne for reconnaissance in Ladakh, sources said.
In response, the Indian Air Force scrambled its Sukhoi fighter jets from Leh Air Force Base to patrol the area, sources added.
However, the Air Force has said that these were regular training departures, and that the airspace was not violated.
According to sources, later that night, the aggression increased among some 250 Indian and Chinese soldiers near LAC in Ladakh. The confrontation was violent, and approximately 70 to 80 Indian soldiers were wounded, they said.
Reinforcements were added to both sides after the incident, sources added.
In September 2019, a fight broke out between Indian and Chinese soldiers on the shore of Pangong Tso Lake in eastern Ladakh, but the matter was resolved through talks between the two armies.
In one of the longest confrontations between the two sides, Indian and Chinese troops were locked in a 73-day standoff in Doklam since June 16, 2017, after the Indian side halted construction of a road in the area disputed by the Chinese Army The impasse ended on August 28.
