A Chinese government adviser has said the country must abandon its illusion that China-US relations will automatically improve under President-elect Joe Biden and that Beijing should prepare for a tough stance from Washington.
Zheng Yongnian, dean of China Advanced Institute for Global and Contemporary Studies, a Shenzhen-based think tank, has said Beijing should seize every opportunity to repair ties with the United States, the South China Morning Post reported, according to ANI.
“The good times are past … the Cold War hawks in America have been in a highly mobilized state for several years, and they will not disappear overnight,” Zheng said during an interview in Guangzhou.
Last Thursday, Joe Biden, speaking in response to the question about economic sanctions on Beijing and his comment on the country during the presidential debate, said he wants to make sure China abides by the rules. “It’s not so much about punishing China, it’s about making sure China understands that it has to follow the rules. It’s a simple proposition, ”Biden said during a meeting with a bipartisan group of governors in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware.
Zheng, who had attended a symposium in August organized by Chinese President Xi Jinping to offer advice on long-term strategy, said there was a bipartisan consensus in the United States on China. He added that there was public resentment against China and that Biden could use his advantage.
Claiming that American society is ‘shattered’, the government adviser said “Biden could do nothing about it.”
“Certainly he is a very weak president, if he cannot solve internal problems, then he will do something on the diplomatic front, he will do something against China. If we say that Trump is not interested in promoting democracy and freedom, Biden is. Trump is not. interested in war … but a Democratic president could start wars, “he said.
Zheng added that China remains steadfast in protecting its sovereignty and hopes that the next US administration “will meet China halfway.”
President Trump’s four years in power were the worst phase in US-China relations, as the ruling Communist Party of China led by President Xi Jinping struggled to deal with what Chinese officials say is the leader. The most elusive and unpredictable American since former US President Richard Nixon. in 1972 he established ties with the communist nation.
During his tenure, Trump, a Republican, aggressively lobbied on all aspects of US-China ties, including with his relentless trade war, challenging China’s military control in the disputed South China Sea, his constant threats to Taiwan. and your brand. coronavirus as ‘China virus’ after it emerged from Wuhan in December last year.
