Results from an early-phase randomized clinical trial of Chinese vaccine candidate Covid-19 CoronaVac show that the formulation appears safe and induces an antibody response in volunteers aged 18 to 59 years.
The results, published in The Lancet, add to the number of candidate vaccines tested that have been found safe. More than 700 volunteers recruited in China between April 16 and May 5 participated in the Chinese vaccine trial.
“The vaccine appeared to be safe and well tolerated at all doses tested … Within 14 days of the final dose, the study detected robust antibody responses after two injections of the candidate vaccine were given 14 days apart “said the magazine.
South Australia on Wednesday declared a six-day lockdown to end what officials described as a highly contagious outbreak of the coronavirus disease that they linked to a traveler who returned from the UK.
Police clash with angry protesters in Berlin
German police unleashed a water cannon on Wednesday in an effort to disperse thousands of protesters angered by plans to empower Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government to enforce more restrictions.
Protesters near Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate threw bottles at the police and detonated smoke bombs. Riot police detained some protesters as they fired volleys of water. The protesters were furious over legislation to be passed by parliament that could allow the government to impose restrictions on social contact, rules on wearing masks and drinking alcohol in public.
Meanwhile, the UK government has released a film based on research showing that ventilation and fresh air intake in indoor spaces can reduce the risk of infection by more than 70%.
