Although the president did not give details of the measures, in recent months the Trump administration has taken several actions against China, including imposing visa restrictions on ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials. Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo have also reached out to their counterparts around the world against China.
Donald Trump, 74, and First Lady Melania Trump, 50, tested positive for COVID-19 last week. The President was transferred to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for treatment, while the First Lady remained in the White House. After four days, Trump was released from the hospital on Monday.
On Wednesday, the House Foreign Affairs Committee released its final report on the origins of COVID-19. “The grand conclusion should come as no surprise: China actively lied to the World Health Organization and did everything possible to cover up the virus,” said Congressman Brian Mast.
“China’s total lack of transparency and mishandling of the coronavirus outbreak has cost hundreds of thousands of lives, millions of jobs, and left incalculable economic destruction. Unfortunately, this is not new behavior for China. The CCP has a long history of manipulation and it’s about time we held them accountable for their crimes. Together, we must ensure that nothing like this happens again! “he said.
Relations between Washington and Beijing have skyrocketed since the novel coronavirus outbreak.
The two countries have also faced China imposing a new national security law in Hong Kong, restrictions on American journalists, treatment of Uighur Muslims and security measures in Tibet.
Meanwhile, US Senator Rick Scott in a letter to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee has urged immediate consideration and approval of his resolution condemning human rights violations in China.
Noting that more than a million Uyghurs are being held in concentration camps in China and that Hong Kong residents are being arrested and denied basic rights promised, Scott in his resolution had urged the International Olympic Committee ( IOC) to take out the 2022 Games from China.
Congressman Brett Guthrie, a top Republican on the House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, introduced Wednesday “Defeating China by Leveraging Major National Radio Waves for the 2020 5G Act. or the “Beat CHINA by the 5G Law of 2020”.
“The key to faster and expanded Internet service is 5G technology. US innovators are working hard to leverage this technology to bring better Internet quality to Americans, and we have to get this technology before China. The Beat CHINA for 5G Act will allow the United States to access spectrum, a critical resource needed for Internet innovation, so that we can build this technology on our own without relying on the Chinese, “said Brett Guthrie.
