China co wins contract for part of Delhi-Meerut RRTS project


NEW DELHI: The National Capital Region Transportation Corporation (NCRTC) has awarded a contract to a Chinese company, Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Company Limited, for the construction of a 5.6 km underground section, from New Ashok Nagar to Sahibabad, of the Delhi-Meerut RRTS project.
The NCRTC, which is running the country’s first Regional Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS), said the contract was awarded following established procedures and guidelines.
“Tenders financed by multilateral organizations must be approved at various levels. This tender was also awarded following the established procedure and guidelines. Now, all the civil works tenders of the 82 km long Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor were awarded and construction is proceeding at full capacity to get the project up and running on time, “said an NCRTC spokesperson.
A controversy had erupted in June last year after STEC emerged as the lowest bidder for the construction of the 5.6 km tunnel on one of the sections of the RRTS Delhi-Meerut project amid a clash between India and China. along the Line of Royal Control. (LAC) in Ladakh.
The 82 km long Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor is being financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and procurement is governed by bank and government guidelines. According to ADB’s procurement guidelines, suppliers from all bank member countries are eligible to participate in the bidding process without discrimination.
The NCRTC had launched bids for the construction of the tunnel from New Ashok Nagar to Sahibabad of the Delhi Ghaziabad Meerut RRTS corridor on November 9, 2019. Five companies submitted technical bids and all five bidders qualified in the technical bid evaluation.
