Former Indian sailor Chetan Sharma will take over as chair of the All India Senior Men Selection Committee, BCCI announced on Thursday (December 24). Sharma was recommended for the position by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), comprised of Madan Lal, Rudra Pratap Singh and Sulakshana Naik, who also proposed the inclusion of former pacemakers Abey Kuruvilla and Debashish Mohanty on the five-member selection panel. .

Sharma, Kuruvilla and Mohanty will join Sunil Joshi and Harvinder Singh on the committee, replacing Sarandeep Singh, Jatin Paranjape and Devang Gandhi, whose terms ended in September. Joshi and Harvinder were appointed to the selection panel earlier this year, with the former serving as head of the selection committee.

Sharma will now chair the selection committee by virtue of his seniority. The 54-year-old has played more Test Match (23) than the rest of his teammates on the panel. The performance of the candidates will be reviewed by the CAC after one year, based on which subsequent recommendations will be made to the BCCI.

The designation of the panel by zones has continued with the latest additions. Sharma, who made his first class debut with Haryana, represents the North Zone, while Kuruvilla and Mohanty occupy the East and West Zone positions respectively. Joshi and Harvinder Singh, the two current members, are from the south and center respectively.

Sharma, who made his debut in India in 1984, represented the country in 23 tests and 65 ODIs, collecting 61 and 67 wickets respectively. He was also the first to get a hat-trick in the World Cup. His last outing for India was in an ODI against the West Indies in 1994.

Kuruvilla, who played in 10 rounds and 25 ODI, collected 25 wickets each in both formats. Having last played for India in 1997, he served on the youth selection panel from 2008 to 2012, and had also served as the coach for Mumbai. He has also served as a Mumbai Indian scout.

Mohanty, who played two Trials and 45 ODIs for India, last played in 2001. He later served as the coach of the Odisha team and also the East Zone, while also being included in the youth selection panel in 2018.
