The Telugu Desam party, the main opposition in Andhra Pradesh, demanded on Thursday that LG Polymers India Ltd in R R Venkatapuram in Visakhapatnam, from whose plant styrene poison gas leaked killing 11 people, outside the city.

In a letter written to the Union’s Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, TDP President and former Prime Minister N Chandrababu Naidu wanted the polymer plant to be closed immediately and a thorough investigation into the gas leak ordered.

“After the investigation, it is necessary to change the entire unit to the Special Economic Zone (EEZ) that has no population nearby,” he suggested.

He also asked Goyal to send medical experts to treat styrene gas victims, as experience in the city of Visakhapatnam may not be required, especially in the wake of the spread of Covid-19 in the area.

Within hours of the tragedy plaguing the port city, Naidu, currently being held in Hyderabad due to the closure, held a conference call with his party colleagues in Visakhapatnam to assess the situation.

Naidu wrote a letter to P. K Mishra, chief secretary of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office, requesting permission to go to Visakhapatnam on a special flight to “monitor” post-disaster activities and comfort those affected by the escape of styrene gas.

However, the TDP chief did not obtain permission from the Center until night. “We are awaiting authorization from the Center. In all likelihood, he could fly to Visakhapatnam on Friday, “said one of his staff members.

TDP spokesman and politburo member Varla Ramaiah sought to know how the government of Jagan Mohan Reddy had issued a certificate of no objection to LG Polymers to restart operations of its plant in Visakhapatnam, although it did not fall into the category of essential goods.

“It is a plastic manufacturing company. Apparently, the company obtained the NOC with the influence of a ruling party leader who claims all rights to Visakhapatnam, “Ramaiah alleged.

Vijayawada TDP deputy Kesineni Srinivas demanded that the cases be brought against negligent officials from the industries department and industries minister Mekapati Gautam Reddy as well. “I demand the resignation of the irresponsible Minister of Industries,” he tweeted.

YSR congressional leaders did not react to the demands and accusations of TDP leaders. The Minister of Industries received no calls, despite repeated attempts.
