Central Hyderabad endures worst of unprecedented rainfall


Hyderabad: Submerged towns, flooded shops and restaurants, overflowing lakes – such were the scenes in the Begumpet, Ameerpet and Panjagutta areas of Central Hyderabad after more than 24 hours of unprecedented and heavy rains that the state witnessed on Wednesday.

The underground parking lot of the Chutneys restaurant in Begumpet was completely submerged to its 12-foot-high ceiling Wednesday morning. The owners had to shut down operations for a day to pump water. However, no further damage was reported. Several homes in low-lying areas of West Marredpally were also affected, pumping out rainwater that had accumulated overnight. Residents of various areas who lived on the ground floor had to move to the upper floors for safety.

In the Chikoti gardens, links to various towns were cut off due to a major flood. The Brindavan Society, consisting of about 100 apartments, plunged into stormwater more than 10 feet high Wednesday morning, with cars in its basement also completely inundated by water. The road to the Church of the Holy Trinity in the same area was also cut off. The church was also surrounded by high levels of water after heavy rains.

While Lake Hussain Sagar reached its tank full level (FTL), with excess water flooding the Padma Colony, Nagamaiah Kunta, Nallakunta, Vidyanagar, Ashok Nagar and other areas, there were also reports that Lake Kapra ruptured and flooded the surrounding areas.

Hyderabad Mayor Dr. Bonthu Rammohan inspected the water levels of Hussain Sagar Lake near Sailing Annexe and ordered officials to alert locals that they could be affected once the gates are raised, he said. in a series of tweets.
