As temperatures continue to rise in the country, people need to turn on their air conditioners (AC) and dessert coolers to get a breather from the scorching heat. However, there have been several concerns about the use of AC and coolers in the midst of the coronavirus COVId-19 pandemic. The Center on Saturday (April 25) released an 18-page guide advising what the optimum temperature should be for AC and refrigerators amid the coronavirus outbreak.
Air conditioners
According to the Center’s notice, the temperature of the home air conditioner should be between 24-30 degrees Celsius and the humidity should be between 40-70 percent.
“Recirculation of cold air by room air conditioners should be accompanied by the intake of outside air through slightly open windows and exhaust by natural exfiltration,” the notice said.
“Too much humidity leads to higher levels of mites and fungi, two of the worst culprits for indoor allergy sufferers. Mold and fungus are known to exacerbate respiratory conditions such as asthma, “he added.
The government also suggested keeping the rooms ventilated even when there is no AC power. “As an additional precaution, the frequency of service can be increased,” the notice added.
For commercial and industrial installations.
The government has suggested outdoor air ventilation as much as possible. “The mechanical exhaust air will be 70-80 percent of the amount of fresh air to maintain the necessary positive pressure in the space,” the notice said.
Desert or evaporative coolers
The Center has also issued guidelines on the use of evaporative or desert coolers that are commonly used in North India.
Notably, most desert coolers do not have air filters, but it is possible to fit the filters in them during or after installation. The installer prevents the entry of dust and maintains hygiene. The government has said in its notice that desert cooler tanks must be kept clean and disinfected and that water must be drained and refilled frequently.
Portable coolers that do not draw in outside air should not be used, according to the notice, adding that “evaporative coolers must draw air from outside to ensure good ventilation.”
Amateurs
According to the Center’s notice, windows must be kept partially open while using electric fans. “If an exhaust fan is nearby, then it can also be turned on to extract air for better ventilation,” he added.
