New Delhi:
The seventh round of talks between the Center and protesting farmers will take place today with two key issues still addressed: the repeal of the three agricultural laws and the granting of legal status to the minimum support price guarantee in the next round. of conversations. The farmers, who are camping on the borders of Delhi amid the cold and rain, warned that they will hold a tractor demonstration on Republic Day if their demands are not met.
In the latest round of meetings, the Center said the two sides had reached an understanding on two of the four farmers’ demands: the withdrawal of the Electricity Amendment Bill and the criminal provisions for stubble burning in the Ordinance of the Air Quality Commission.
But the stalemate has persisted because of the repeal of the three agricultural laws passed in September that had farmers in arms.
Farmers’ representatives who attended the last round of the meeting on December 30, said the government has indicated that it will not repeal the laws, citing the lengthy and cumbersome process required.
The government also made clear that it is not ready for the legally required support prices for products and said a committee can be formed to investigate it.
Farmers have taken a hard line on the issue, saying they will hold a tractor rally on the GT-Karnal road on January 6 if their demands are not met. “If the government does not agree to our demands, we will start marching towards Delhi from the Shahjahanpur border next week,” said Swaraj India chief Yogendra Yadav.
There are also plans to hold a rally on January 26, Republic Day.
Last month, the Supreme Court ordered a special committee to be formed, insisting that the Center’s negotiations had failed. “Their negotiation will fail again because they (the farmers) will not agree,” said the bank headed by Chief Justice of India SA Bobde.
