The Union Ministry of the Interior has asked all Union states and territories to cooperate with the railways to operate more special “Shramik” trains for migrant workers.
“I urge everyone to allow them to receive all of the Shramik special trains without hindrance and to facilitate the faster movement of stranded migrant workers to their places of origin,” the letter from Interior Minister Ajay Bhalla said in a letter. to the states.
In the letter, he also called on union states and territories to ensure that migrant workers do not resort to walking on roads, railways and using the special trains available.
Indian railways have operated 428 “Shramik” special trains since May 1 and transported more than 4.5 lakh of stranded migrants to their homes in various parts of the country amid the coronavirus-induced blockade, officials said Sunday.

As of May 9, of the 287 trains that had finished, 127 ended in Uttar Pradesh, 87 in Bihar, 24 in Madhya Pradesh, 20 in Odisha, 16 in Jharkhand, four in Rajasthan, three in Maharashtra, two in Telangana and West Bengal, and one in Andhra Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh, officials said.
These trains have transported migrants to cities such as Tiruchchirappalli, Titlagarh, Barauni, Khandwa, Jagannathpur, Khurda Road, Chhapra, Balia, Gaya, Purnia, Varanasi.
Each special “Shramik” train has 24 carriages, each with a capacity of 72 seats. However, only 54 people are allowed on a coach and the central berth is not assigned to any passenger to maintain the rules of social distancing.

Since the special “Shramik” train service began, Gujarat has remained one of the main origin stations, followed by Kerala.
Bihar and Uttar Pradesh top the list of recipient states.
