The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the Hathras rape and murder case on Saturday. The Ghaziabad unit of the agency has re-registered the FIRs that were previously submitted by UP police. The agency will also investigate FIRs related to sedition, disrupting law and order, and the conspiracy that UP police had recorded after violent protests rocked Hathras.
Earlier, the Personnel and Training Department issued a notice, paving the way for CBI to take over the case. The government of Uttar Pradesh had approached the Supreme Court requesting a court-supervised CBI investigation, but in the absence of clear direction from the higher court, recommendations were sent to the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Personnel, which is the administrative ministry in charge of CBI.
Investigation teams will be dispatched to the crime scene along with forensic experts immediately after an FIR search, authorities said.
The Dalit woman had died of serious injuries in a Delhi hospital on September 29, 15 days after she was allegedly raped in her village by four upper-caste men. In addition to the alleged gang rape case, the government of Uttar Pradesh has requested an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the FIR related to the alleged criminal conspiracy to spread the caste conflict, instigate violence, propaganda incidents vicious on the part of sections of the media and political interests, they said.
