Hathras:
The four defendants in the alleged gang rape and torture of a young Dalit in Hathras in Uttar Pradesh in September were charged today by the IWC with gang rape and murder, more than three months after the incident that sparked outrage in the whole country.
The IWC has also invoked charges against the defendants under the SC / ST (Atrocity Prevention) Act. The investigative agency presented its charge sheet in court in Hathras, some 200 km from Delhi.
The 20-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly raped by four men from the so-called upper caste community in Hathras on September 14. He later died of his injuries in a Delhi hospital. The victim was cremated near his home on September 30.
The handling of the case by Uttar Pradesh police, in particular the nightly cremation of the victim allegedly without the approval of the family, sparked angry protests across the country. Officials, however, said the cremation was carried out “according to the wishes of the family.”
In October, the Supreme Court said that the Allahabad High Court will oversee the investigation carried out by the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation).
The main defendant had written to the Uttar Pradesh police from prison, claiming that he and the three other defendants were being framed in the case and were seeking “justice” for the four men. He also accused the woman’s mother and brother of torturing her. The woman’s family has denied these accusations.
Earlier this week, the CBI sought more time to conclude its investigation, after which the Lucknow Court of the Allahabad High Court set Wednesday, January 27, as the next hearing date in the case.
