At a Congress Legislative Party (CLP) meeting here on Sunday, Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh was reported to have hinted at “exemplary” action during the Punjab Assembly session that begins Monday. Sources said the MLA in Congress told the CM that it was imperative to confront the Modi government with the new farm laws, regardless of the consequences.

They were unanimous in their opinion that the minimum support price (MSP) and the ‘mandi’ system must be protected at all costs and the “unconstitutional laws, which go against federalism” must be countered.

“This fight will continue. We will fight this up to the Supreme Court, ”Captain Amarinder is said to have told the MLAs.

“The Center can ‘fire’ the congressional government if it wishes, but we will do everything we can to protect the farmers,” said the head of the state Congress, Sunil Jakhar, after the meeting.

The Council of Ministers, which met after the CLP meeting, authorized the Chief Minister to take whatever legislative / legal decision he deems appropriate to protect the interests of farmers. Noting that “the whole world is looking at Punjab with high expectations,” the Chief Minister sought the opinion of his ministers and the MLAs on a bill that will be presented on the second day of the session and that could be extended until Wednesday ( October 21).

A decision on this will be made at a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee on Monday.
