Twitter exploded after England captain Joe Root made a surprising one-handed catch to dismiss India’s Ajinkya Rahane on Day 3 of the first India vs England test match at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Root, who became the first in cricket history to score a double-hundred in his 100th Test, took advantage of a tremendous reflex catch of Dom Bess’s delivery to scoop out Ajinkya Rahane’s wicket.

Bess, who had her tail raised after India captain Virat Kohli’s huge wicket in her previous over, tossed it to Rahane in the 27th over of Indian innings. Rahane hopped down the track and made it a full pitch, but didn’t play the cover drive at full strength. What was worse, was the fact that it was blown up and Root, who was standing by the blankets, flew to his left and grabbed a stunner in one hand.

Joe Root’s surprising reception meant that India was cut to 73-for-four in response to England’s mammoth first innings of 578 in Root’s 218 innings.

Pacer Jofra Archer consolidated England’s position, eliminating both starters. India suffered a second jolt when young Shubman Gill (29, 28 balls, 5 fours) was caught brilliantly by veteran James Anderson in the middle of the on when he couldn’t keep the drive down.

Earlier, England posted a mammoth of 578 in its first innings, losing the last two wickets in the morning session while adding 23 runs to the night’s score.

Dom Bess (34, 105 balls, 6 fours) was the first to go, his leg caught earlier by Jasprit Bumrah with one that was bowed sharply.

Number 10 Jack Leach (14 no out) and number 11 James Anderson (1) extended England’s innings by five more overs before the latter was thrown when he failed to land a sweep to Ravichandran Ashwin.
