The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the Women’s Tennis Associations (WTA) are the two separate governing bodies for men’s and women’s tennis. However, Roger Federer has now expressed his wish for the merger of the two separate entities.
The ATP and WTA are already working closely together on many competitive issues, such as standards and anti-doping. Currently, there are some top-tier combo tournaments on the tennis tour, such as the four Grand Slams, Indian Wells, Miami, and Madrid. However, most of the tour consists of separate tournaments. Subsequently, the WTA and ATP have different calendars, broadcast partners, and business relationships.
In addition, the two associations have different classifications and an income distribution system. Therefore, the merger of the two tennis associations would be in the best interest of the sport as a whole. The Swiss legend also feels the same way.
“Now is the time for men’s and women’s tennis” – Roger Federer
“I’m just wondering … Am I the only one who thinks that now is the time for men’s and women’s tennis to come together and come together as one?” Federer wrote on Twitter.
Federer’s post left many fans confused about what he is wondering. Later, he clarified that he is talking about the merger between ATP and WTA.
He also clarified that he is not talking about the merger of the two bodies on the court, like the Hopman Cup, but he is pointing out that he has a world tennis organization. He explained that it is a bit confusing for fans with “different ranking systems, different logos, different websites, different tournament logos.”
The Swiss master also suggested that the merger should have happened a long time ago. However, during the current global crisis, when the entire sports world has been hit hard, it is the best time to come together as a “strong” organization.

I’m not talking about merging competition on the court, but rather merging the 2 governing bodies (ATP and WTA) that oversee men’s and women’s professional tours …

I agree with you, it is too confusing for fans when there are different ranking systems, different logos, different websites, different tournament categories. https://t.co/zX4XTr9Rr0

It probably should have happened a long time ago, but maybe now is really the time.
These are tough times in all sports and we can get through this with 2 weakened bodies or 1 stronger body. https://t.co/30SbbAla5g– Roger Federer (@rogerfederer) April 22, 2020

Tennis currently has a highly fragmented governance structure with ATP, WTA and ITF. Therefore, merging organizations is certainly difficult and complicated. Anyway, it is not impossible. Tennis can also have a single governing body like other sports. What you think?
