HIGHLIGHT

  • Shubman Gill scored 45 of 65 balls before being fired by Pat Cummins
  • Shubman Gill is India’s third-highest run scorer on the test debut in Australia
  • Shubman Gill fell twice during his 58-run 65-ball hit on his debut

Indian starter Shubman Gill became the country’s third-highest race scorer on Sunday in the test’s debut in Australia when he scored 45 runs on the second day of the ongoing ‘Boxing Day Test’.

Gill had a chance at Test 2 against Australia after Prithvi Shaw performed poorly in Test 1 in Adelaide. Gill broke eight limits during his 65-ball hit, posting a dominating performance against a formidable bowling attack, despite the early ejection of fellow starter Mayank Agarwal.

Gill’s opening partner, Agarwal, holds the record for the highest race scorer for India on the test’s debut in Australia. Agarwal had scored 76 runs on his debut against Australia in 2018. Dattu Phadkar, who had scored 51 runs on his Sydney debut, in December 1947 is second on the list.

Gill’s lucky run on the crease continued as the India starter fell twice during his 65-ball hit. Gill got an early pardon in the 4 when Marnus Labuschagne dropped a regulation catch on the slide on day 1 and then again in Tim Paine failed to hold on to a relatively every catch behind the stumps as the Indian rookie score 28.

However, Gill did not reach fifty on his debut when Pat Cummins gave Australia the first breakthrough on Day 2 at the MCG. Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara took India past 50 before Cummins fired the duo.

Previously, India proved there is life without captain Virat Kohli, as they defeated Australia by 195 and then withstood a fierce assault in the late afternoon to dominate the opening day of the second test in Melbourne.
