NEW DELHI: Asian Games gold-winning boxer Dingko Singh was flown in Saturday from Imphal to the national capital for treatment for liver cancer.

The transfer from Dingko to Delhi in a Spicejet air ambulance was facilitated by the Indian Boxing Federation (BFI) after a scheduled radiation therapy session was lost due to the ongoing national blockade forced by coronavirus.

The 41-year-old man was due to undergo radiation therapy two weeks ago, but was unable to come to Delhi due to the closure.

BFI President Ajay Singh, who is also the president and managing director of SpiceJet, personally took the initiative to fly to Dingko after learning of his deteriorating health.

The decorated boxer was accompanied by his wife Ngangom Babai Devi.

Dingko, an Arjuna and Padma Shri winner, is battling a relapse of liver cancer. Boxer Manipuri was a bantamweight boxer and won the gold of the Asian Games in the 1998 edition in Bangkok.
