The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) claimed on Monday that Indian soldiers fired warning shots along the Royal Line of Control in Ladakh, prompting it to take “countermeasures to stabilize the situation on the ground.”
NDTV it quoted a PLA spokesman as alleging that Indian troops “illegally crossed LAC and entered the southern shore of Lake Pangong and the mountainous area of Shenpao.”
The spokesman called it a “serious provocation of a very bad nature” and added: “We request the Indian side to immediately stop the dangerous actions.”
However, India has denied firing throughout LAC, News18 they quoted government sources as saying.
A week ago, Indian troops occupied strategic heights on the southern bank of Pangong Tso and Rechin La, giving them a commanding view of the terrain in the Chushul sector, according to The Indian Express.
Through the occupation of strategic heights, India reportedly hopes to bring the Chinese back to the separation talks.
The Chinese military’s claims came shortly after Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said that the state of the border with China cannot be disassociated from the state of the general relationship with the neighboring country.
The foreign minister also described the situation in eastern Ladakh as “very serious”, which, he said, requires “a very, very deep conversation” between the two sides at the political level.
Jaishankar will meet with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on September 10 in Moscow, on the sidelines of the eight-nation Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) foreign ministers meeting.
Last week, the Indian military had said that the Chinese military had carried out “provocative military moves” to unilaterally change the status quo on the southern shore of Pangong Tso Lake on the middle night of August 29-30.
Then, government sources had said PTI that a considerable number of Chinese troops were moving towards the southern shore of Pangong Tso Lake in an attempt to occupy the area, but the Indian army quickly made a significant deployment to thwart the offer.
