Mumbai. The Bombay high court (HC) on Friday refused to interfere with the launch of the web series BETAAL.

The horror of the series, produced by Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment and Netflix Entertainment Services, was published in the top (OTT) platform Netflix, the Sunday.

Screenwriter Sameer Wadekar had moved the court seeking an injunction against the manufacturers of BETAAL, saying that he has written many stories, which were protected by the copyright law, and registered with the Screen Writers ‘ Association. Said VETAAL was one of the original literary works that were written in 2013-2014 and registered in the year 2015.

He quoted that on the 7th of May, he received a YouTube video from a friend. It was a promo of a web series BETAAL and the 146-second clip contains at least 13 similarities to his own copyrighted work, VETAAL.

However, the Justice KR Shriram, he was not convinced with Wadekar claims. The judge asked how Wadekar’s work may have landed with the BETAAL writer. He also found Wadekar statement of date because Netflix had announced in July of 2019 that was going to come out with a web series called BETAAL and the news was widely spread at that time. The judge said that the concept of BETAAL originates from Vetalam based on the well known mythological story of Vikramaditya and Vetaal.

The court, however, allowed Wadekar to amend its complaint to include the claim for damages against BETAAL producers.
