BMC Seals 1,305 Buildings As Covid-19 Cases Rise In Mumbai | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: Two days after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) again tightened the standards for sealing buildings in the city, civic data shows that the number of buildings sealed stands at 1,305.
As of February 18, the number of buildings sealed was 321.
Civic officials noted that previously, only fully sealed buildings with positive cases in the city that were in decline were kept. However, now even those with sealed floors are registering due to the increasing number of Covid-19 cases.
Outside of building 1,305, it is seen that T Ward (Mulund) has the maximum number of sealed buildings and floors, that is 233, followed by N Ward (Ghatkopar) and P South (Goregaon) which has 125 sealed buildings / floors.
A civic official said the spike in numbers was also due to sealed floor data they have started to keep once again.
“The cases were in decline and we were only sealing floors and therefore the data was not reflected. Now, it was decided to seal the entire building once more,” said the official.
Another official pointed out that before, there had to be 10 positive cases in a building to seal it, but now, even if there are five cases, the building should be sealed.
Meanwhile, the BMC’s action against those who do not wear masks has yet to gather steam.
On February 18, BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal had ordered that the bailiffs appointed by the civic body be given a goal of catching at least 25,000 criminals every day.
However, on February 19, only 13,592 people were fined and a fine of Rs. 27.18 lakh of them were collected.
On February 16, 13,557 people were fined and charged Rs 27.11 lakh as a penalty.
Congress corporate Ravi Raja said that many people are observed to wear masks but do not maintain social distancing in public places.
“In addition, it has been observed that people do not wear the masks properly, which defeats the purpose of putting them on,” Raja said.
