‘Blockade will be imposed in some places, the situation is not out of control yet’ – Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray

Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said Thursday that lockdown will be set in some places to address the increase in Covid-19 cases in the state. However, he said the situation has yet to get out of control.

“In a few days, we may have to close some places. We may have to start from scratch, but still the situation has not gotten out of control. In some places, a strict lockdown will be imposed, a decision that soon”, he said after receiving his first shot injected at JJ Hospital in Mumbai.

“There is no need to be fearful or apprehensive about vaccines. I appeal to whoever is eligible to get vaccinated. We are accelerating vaccination,” added Thackeray.

They gave him Covaxin, the Covid-19 vaccine made by Bharat Biotech. His wife Rashmi and his mother also received the first dose of the vaccine.

Senior doctors were present when the vaccine was administered to the prime minister.

The comments come a day after Maharashtra, the worst affected state, recorded 13,659 cases of Covid-19, its first one-day peak of more than 13,000 in 2021 and the highest in 154 days. Prior to this, the state recorded 14,578 cases on October 8, 2020.

Maharashtra has recorded 2,252,057 infections to date. The state also recorded 54 deaths on Wednesday, bringing the toll to 52,619. Mumbai, which has been recording more than 1,000 cases for a week, also recorded 1,539 cases and five deaths, bringing the count to 337,124 and the balance to 11,515 deaths.

District magistrates in a few places, seeing an uptick in daily cases, have imposed restrictions to control the spread of the infection. On Thursday, the full shutdown was announced in Nagpur from March 15-21. The district administration said essential services will not be affected by the order.

Jalgaon district will witness the nightly curfew from Thursday to Monday (March 15) due to the increase in the number of cases.
