BJP’s Vel Yatra resumes without permission, causing traffic problems

Court approval still awaited, police

During a special session for the hearing of an urgent car petition promoted by the BJP on Saturday, the party’s secretary general of state, K Nagarajan, told the Madras High Court that only 30 people in 15 cars will participate in the yatra and that the trip will end long before December 6, the anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition.

The petition filed by Tamil Nadu BJP Secretary General K Nagarajan claimed that the state government had no powers to prevent religious gatherings outside the containment zones, especially as the center had allowed religious congregations of more than 100 people since 15 October subject to standard operating procedures (SOPs) issued by the state.

The defender of the party told the judges that on Sunday there will be a new representation before the police, which will guarantee that there are no objections in the granting of the permit.

While a judge asked why the BJP had to choose an elaborate route that not only covers only the temples, Judge Hemalatha asked the state government why they opposed the yatra when thousands of devotees were allowed into the temples.

Attorney General Vijay Narayan clarified that this was not a mere visit, but could draw large crowds, which is a bad idea during a pandemic. The Court allowed until Tuesday for the petitioner to submit an additional affidavit with all the details, however, the party decided to move forward.
