Dehradun:
Shayara Bano, who was the first to move the Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of the triple talaq, said on Sunday that it was the BJP’s progressive approach to Muslim women that had motivated her to join the party.
Ms Bano, a Kashipur resident in Uttarakhand’s Udham Singh Nagar district, was received at the BJP by its state chairman Bansidhar Bhagat on Saturday in the presence of senior party leaders.
“It was basically the BJP’s progressive approach towards Muslim women, the commitment with which it worked to outlaw triple talaq and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of inclusive development that led me to the party,” Bano told PTI.
She said she had joined the BJP to fight for Muslim women’s rights and rid them of injustices such as denial of access to higher education.
Ms Bano also said that she will try to break down misconceptions about the BJP that it is anti-minority.
“I believe in the just intentions of the party towards minorities. It is necessary to break the erroneous idea that the party is against minorities,” he said.
She was the first to challenge the constitutionality of the triple talaq practice in high court in 2016, four months after her husband divorced her via speed post.
When asked if he will also participate in the elections, he said: “I have not come to the BJP looking for a party ballot.”
“But I am ready to accept whatever task is assigned to me. My sole goal is to fight for the upliftment and empowerment of Muslim women who are still subjected to injustices such as denial of access to higher education,” Ms Bano said .
When contacted by BJP state chairman Bhagat, he said that he expected Bano to fight for the party’s ideology with the same determination with which he fought and won his legal battle against the triple talaq.
