BJP's 'Fact vs Fiction' social media pushes in defense of farm laws

Social media memes mainly distinguish between a “rumor” and the “truth.”

New Delhi:

The BJP today launched a social media campaign to endorse the three new agricultural laws introduced by the central government in September, in an attempt to dispel what it calls myths spread by political opponents of the Narendra Modi regime.

Thousands of farmers, backed by various political parties, have been protesting for more than two weeks against the new agricultural ordinances. Today, the protesters had also called for a Bharat Bandh.

By posting a series of memes on Hindi on social media today about farm laws, the saffron party projected the positive aspects of farm ordinances. This includes reiterating all the benefits accrued to farmers and also the positives that the laws have left intact of the old system, including government-backed markets and the continuation of the guaranteed minimum support price (MSP) for various products.

For example, a meme published today by the party begins by saying: “They (the old governments) kept diverting farmers and licking all the cream themselves, while Modi Sarkar works on the welfare of farmers.”

He goes on to distinguish between a “rumor” and the “truth”: the rumor is that “the industrialists will seize the lands of the farmers”; the fact that “trapping is impossible as the new law provides full protection to farmers.”

Finally, he asks: “So why is there an upheaval under the guise of opposition to the agricultural reform law?”

Another meme, with the same initial lines, distinguishes between the rumor of “the elimination of the MSP with the new law” and the fact that “the new law does not refer to the MSP at all.”

Another category of memes mainly shows the highlights of the new farm laws. These include removing edible oil, onions, cereals, and potatoes from the list of essentials; lifting the uncertainty of farmers regarding the choice of crop; the resulting expansion in production, transportation, and distribution will help the economy grow.
