Mumbai / New Delhi:

BJP leader Eknath Khadse will join the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Friday, Maharashtra Minister Jayant Patil said today.

“He (Khadse) will join the NCP at 2pm on Friday … this will strengthen the NCP,” Jayant Patil, the state head of the NCP, told reporters.

Eknath Khadse, who was a minister in the BJP government in Maharashtra in 2016, has been upset since he was forced to resign over corruption allegations.

In recent days there has been speculation that he could resign from the BJP and join the party led by Sharad Pawar. The BJP had also commented on the rumor.

“There is talk of this kind of mahurat (auspicious time) every day and I will not talk about it,” former Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis of the BJP said on Tuesday.

A day earlier, Sharad Pawar had said that Eknath Khadse, as leader of the opposition, had played a very important role in building the BJP in Maharashtra. “He would criticize us and we would take note of it,” Pawar said.

He said Khadse would be justified in resigning from the BJP. “You are bound to be disturbed if your contributions and hard work are not noted. You may wonder why you shouldn’t switch to a party that appreciates your work,” the NCP veteran had said.
