BJP’s Babul Supriyo Mocks Mamata By Launching Debate On President’s Government In Bengal

Union Minister Babul Supriyo has sparked a dispute by saying that there was a dawai (drug) in the Indian Constitution that can prevent a state government from terrorizing the people and has hinted that it is not impossible for the Center to take that path .

Supriyo said this when referring to the alleged killing of Bharatiya Janata Party workers in West Bengal by the ruling Trinamool Congress. To date, more than 100 BJP workers have been killed in the state, allegedly by TMC, but the latter has always dismissed the allegations every time they pointed the finger at him.

“BJP workers are being killed. If didi (Mamata Banerjee) thinks that there is a weak government in the Center, he would be making a serious mistake. The BJP will not have to do anything because there are provisions set out in the Constitution itself on how to stop such a destructive and fierce government. The dawai for such governments is clearly mentioned in the Constitution. It is not impossible to take that path. So I shouldn’t think that I would keep torturing people for the next six months to stop people from voting, ”Supriyo said.

With less than six months to go until the crucial assembly elections in West Bengal, the BJP has become the main opposition to the ruling TMC. After its impressive advances in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, where the BJP won 18 out of 42 seats and around 40% of the votes, it is now targeting the Bengal assembly.

The TMC, however, has criticized saying that the situation of law and order is better in Bengal compared to Uttar Pradesh and that the party is not giving any importance to such statements.

By saying dawai, Babul Supriyo was referring to the imposition of article 356 of the Constitution in the state. But TMC is not taking this seriously. The Supreme Court has clearly established what must be done before Section 356 can be invoked. It is only making a few political statements, which are unimportant. If the Center has to invoke Article 356, it must first investigate Uttar Pradesh, ”said Saugata Roy, MP of TMC.

However, this is not the first time that Supriyo has made such comments. In September, he had made similar statements invoking the President’s Rule in the state referring to alleged murders of BJP workers.

“The recent chain of events, ranging from the attack on a member of the Sikh community, the arrest of Al-Qaeda agents to the blatant assassination of Manish Shukla and other political opponents, shows that it is an appropriate case for the imposition of the Article 365 in West Bengal ”, Supriyo had previously said.

Political leaders said that demands made by some BJP leaders for the imposition of the President’s Rule would increase pressure on the TMC government. “Law and order in West Bengal has definitely deteriorated, but not to the extent that it is necessary to enforce the President’s Rule. Law and order at UP is much worse. This is just a political statement to keep the pressure on the TMC government, ”said Pradip Bhattacharya, veteran leader of Congress.
