The Bharatiya Janata Party MLA of Uttar Pradesh Surendra Singh said on Saturday that parents of young women should instill in them good values to stop incidents of rape, ANI reported. His comment came amid national outrage over the death of a 20-year-old Dalit woman from the state district of Hathras, after he was raped and tortured by four upper-caste Thakur men.
“These incidents can only be stopped with sanskar [culture and values] and not with shashan [governance] or talwar [sword]”Said Singh, who is an MLA from the state’s Ballia district.
Singh added that it was the duty of parents to instill good values in their children. “The government’s job is to protect the people, but it is also the responsibility of parents to teach children polite manners and behavior,” she said. “Our country can become beautiful with the combination of sanskar and sarkar [government]. “
Singh has also made controversial statements in the past. He said in November that Nathuram Godse, the murderer of Mahatma Gandhi, was not a terrorist but an individual who had made a “mistake.”
