Contrary to the trend of the ruling party in a state that also wins local elections, the BJP beat Congress in the Panchayat Samiti and Zila Parishad elections held in 21 districts of Rajasthan. The count is still going on, with the BJP holding a solid lead.

Against the 1,833 members of the BJP panchayat samiti, Congress has won 1,713, followed by independents with 420. Also, in zila parishad polls, the BJP has won 265, compared to 201 in Congress.

Congratulating the party, BJP chief JP Nadda said that the victory symbolizes the trust that the poor, farmers and workers have in the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a tweet on Wednesday, she thanked women, farmers and other rural voters in the congressionally governed state for putting their “faith” in the BJP.

Until Tuesday afternoon, Congress was in the lead, but in the afternoon, the BJP went ahead in both panchayat samitis and zila parishads. BJP state chairman Satish Poonia said the party’s performance was “historic” and a “triumph of the BJP’s rural development policies and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ideas for farmers.”

The Ashok Gehlot-led Congressional government hoped to maintain its hot streak in recent urban body elections (the party had formed boards of directors in four of the six municipal corporations, including Jaipur, Jodhpur and Kota, where elections were held in October). November this year.

For the faction-ridden Rajasthan BJP, the results have been a much-needed boost. In addition to fighting internal disputes, the party has also come under attack by its only ally in the state, the Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP), for agricultural laws.

The CPI (M) has won 16 panchayat samiti seats, mainly in Sikar, followed by the BSP in three. Two of the CPI (M) candidates also won zila parishad seats in Hanumangarh.

In 21 districts, out of a total of 33 in Rajasthan, a total of 12,663 candidates compete for 4,371 panchayat samiti positions. For Zila Parishad, a total of 1,778 candidates are competing for 636 positions. Ajmer, Banswara, Barmer, Bhilwara, Bikaner, Bundi, Chittorgarh, Churu, Dungarpur, Hanumangarh, Jaisalmer, Jalore, Jhalawar, Jhunjhunu, Nagaur, Pali, Pratapgarh, Rajsamand, Sikar, Tonk and Udaurnas attended the urns.
