BARUIPUR / SILIGURI: The newly appointed BJP National Secretary Anupam Hazra has said that he would hug Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee if she is infected with the coronavirus to make her feel the pain of the families of Covid-19 patients.
The Trinamool Congress in Siliguri filed a police complaint over Hazra’s comments on a party program in Baruipur, south of 24 Parganas, on Sunday night.
“Our workers are fighting an enemy bigger than the crown. They are fighting Mamata Banerjee. When (BJP cadres) have been able to fight Mamata Banerjee without a mask, they think that they can also fight Covid-19 without wearing a mask. Hazra said.
“I have decided that if the coronavirus infects me, I will go and hug Mamata Banerjee,” he added.
Hazra, a former TMC MP who joined the BJP last year, said that the way the bodies of Covid-19 patients were being cremated in the state was pathetic.
“She (Banerjee) treated the victims of the disease in a pathetic way. Their bodies were burned with kerosene. The children were not allowed to see the faces of their parents who died of Covid-19. We did not even treat the cats or dogs killed that way, “he said.
TMC Senior Leader Saugato Roy condemned the comments, saying that such comments reflect the mindset of the BJP.
“Such words and statements can only come from the leaders of the BJP. This reflects the mentality of the party. We condemn such crazy statements,” he said.
The Siliguri unit of the Trinamool Congress organized a demonstration against Hazra and filed a police complaint against him.
“We have filed a police complaint against Anupam Hazra. We have urged the police to take immediate action against him,” said a senior TMC leader from the North Bengal city.
In reaction to the police complaint, Hazra told PTI that Banerjee has also made several controversial comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“If my comments are degrading, then Mamata Banerjee had also made such comments against the prime minister. Second, if an FIR has been filed against me, then at least 10 FIRs should be filed against the TMC leaders,” he said. .
However, the BJP state leadership distanced itself from Hazra’s comment.
“We do not support such comments. We should avoid making such comments,” said a BJP state leader.
