BJP government attacks informal sector: Rahul Gandhi

Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday launched a scathing attack on the central government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claiming it has destroyed the economy by repeatedly attacking the informal structure.

“There is an attempt to make you a slave,” he said in a 3.38-minute video on the current state of the economy.

In 2008, Gandhi said that the world was hit by an economic storm that affected the entire world, including the United States, Japan, Europe and China.

In the United States and Europe, banks collapsed, corporations and companies went out of business, but India was not affected, he added.

“India had a UPA government at that time. I went to the Prime Minister and asked him, Manmohan Singh ji, what is the reason why when the whole world has suffered an economic crisis, India has not been affected? said the former head of Congress.

Manmohan Singh ji replied: Rahul, if you want to understand the economy of India, you will have to understand that India has two economic structures. One is the formal economy and the other is the informal economy, ”he added.

The video is part of Gandhi’s new series on economics. He had previously published a five-part series on Chinese incursions into Ladakh.

“You know the large companies that make up the formal sector. The informal sector includes farmers, workers, and MSMEs. Until such time as the informal sector in India is strong, no economic storm will be able to touch India, ”he said.

“But for the last six years, the BJP government has been attacking the informal sector. I am giving you three massive examples right now: demonetization, wrong goods and services tax (GST) and the blockade imposed to contain the coronavirus pandemic, ”Gandhi alleged.

“Don’t think the confinement was not planned. Don’t think it was done at the last minute. The objective of these three decisions was to destroy our informal sector ”, he alleged.

Since March 25, India has witnessed various phases of a national shutdown to control the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. Gandhi had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and criticized the move, saying it would have disastrous consequences on the economy.

In the new video, Gandhi again confronted Modi, saying that he “needs the media and the marketing” to run the government. “This media and marketing management is carried out by between 15 and 20 people.”

Gandhi said that the informal sector has a lot of money that the government cannot touch. “They want to break this sector and extort this money from them,” he added.

Gandhi said that the effects of this attack on the informal sector will be seen soon. “The results will be that India will not be able to generate jobs because the informal sector produces 90% of the jobs. Once the informal sector is destroyed, India will not be able to generate jobs, “he said.

Congress has been attacking the government for unemployment, saying it has assumed “fearsome” proportions. He also claimed that the record of “45 years of unemployment” has been broken as around 135 million people are likely to lose their jobs due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“You are the ones who run this country. You carry us forward and there is a conspiracy against you. They are being deceived and there is an attempt to make them slaves. We have to understand this attack and the whole country has to come together to fight this, ”Gandhi said in his message to those involved in the informal sector.
