Calcutta: Ahead of the Assembly elections early next year in West Bengal, rival parties in the state have started shooting at each other over their party leaders allegedly trying to switch camps. On Sunday, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Kunal Ghosh said few leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were trying to join the TMC due to infighting in the party.
“Yesterday some said that Sougata Ray and others are joining another party. Sougata babu is a high-ranking deputy. The BJP leaders are trying to silence the fact that they are upset by their internal discord, as three or four of your MPs and other leaders are reaching out to us to join the Trinamool Congress, “Ghosh said at a news conference in Kolkata.
Ghosh’s comments come amid speculation that some party members are leaving. On Saturday, TMC MP Sougata Roy had also said that he was standing firm with his party and would never join the BJP, adding that Barrackpore BJP MP Arjun Singh was a “third class” politician and “Bahubali” for saying that he and five others were going to change.
‘Congressional, CPM and TMC leaders look forward to joining the BJP’
On Sunday, the National Secretary General of the BJP, Kailash Vijayvargiya, said that many leaders of Congress, CPM and TMC hope to join the BJP.
“BJP will fight independently, we believe in the 51 percent vote policy. It is true that many leaders of Congress, CPM and TMC want to join BJP and we will accommodate them according to their ability,” he told the ANI news agency.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banarjee plans to hold a series of administrative meetings on the development work carried out and its progress from November 23 to 25 in Bankura. The chief minister is expected to make her first election speech at a public rally there after Covid-19 restrictions were relaxed. Two weeks ago, the former president of the BJP, Amit Shah, had visited Bankura.
