BJP Ally Rashtriya Loktantrik Party leaves NDA in protest of farm laws

'Will not support anyone against farmers': Rajasthan ally leaves BJP

Hanuman Beniwal had formed the RLP after leaving the BJP.

New Delhi:

The Rashtriya Loktantrik Party, led by Hanuman Beniwal, said on Saturday that it was resigning from the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to protest the three agricultural laws that have sparked mass demonstrations by farmers.

“We will not support anyone who is against farmers,” said Beniwal, a deputy from Rajasthan’s Nagaur Lok Sabha, addressing protesters on the Shahjahanpur-Kheda border in Rajasthan’s Alwar district.

Beniwal had created the Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) in Rajasthan after resigning from the BJP prior to the 2018 state elections. The party allied with the BJP prior to the 2019 general elections, but has criticized agricultural laws and provided support. to the farmers’ movement.

The RLP is the latest NDA member to leave the alliance that had previously seen high-profile exits in Shiv Sena last year and Akali Dal, who resigned in September after facing backlash from farmers.

Farmers launched a massive demonstration last month against the three new central governments that they fear will eventually dismantle regulated markets and prevent the government from buying wheat and rice at guaranteed prices.

Thousands of farmers from various states have camped on the outskirts of New Delhi for more than a month, blocking roads to demand that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government repeal farm laws passed in September with little debate.

Assuring farmers that they face no threat, Prime Minister Modi has said that the protests were politically motivated and that “some people” were spreading lies and rumors about farmers’ problems.
