WASHINGTON: In congratulating Bihar’s Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on his electoral victory, Indian-Americans with roots in Bihar have offered their services for the development of the eastern state.
A group of American Indians from Bihar on Tuesday urged the prime minister to identify education, health and industrialization as areas of focus for his government for the next five years.
“Bihar has the potential to be a great tourist destination that will create thousands of jobs,” said Alok Kumar, former president of the Federation of Indian Associations, adding that he expects Kumar to focus on the education and health sector rather than never.
“We want the (Bihar) government to involve us or partner with us in the development of Bihar, especially in the field of health, education and technology,” said Avinash Gupta, President of Bihar and Jharkhand Association of North America .
Technology professional Sanjeev Singh said Bihar’s infrastructure and law and order have improved in the recent past, but there was a long way to go in many areas such as basic education, social justice and employment.
“I hope that the new government will come up with a five-year rapid growth plan in these sectors that will take Bihar to the next level and help show its full potential,” he said.
Describing Bihar as “a land of enlightenment,” Sudhanshu Prasad, a former Councilor for Edison Township in New Jersey, said the people of the state have high expectations of the new government.
“People have to be made to feel like they are the stakeholders,” he said.
“We, the NRIs, would strongly recommend shifting the focus on industry growth to target 50 percent of state revenue. This would not only provide more employment opportunities for Bihar residents, but also open more avenues for business growth, ”said businessman Rajiv Akhaury.
More Special Economic Zones and smart cities should be established to promote exports and attract companies to establish their units, he said.
“During the 17th century, Patna (the capital of Bihar) was the center of international trade. We need to bring the same era back, ”added Akhaury. Businessman Anurag Kumar said he would like to see how the Bihar government engages Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to help in the growth of business, education and exports.
“We would like to have an NRI cell where we can have direct access to find the opportunity and participate in the success of Bihar,” said Kumar.
Software professional Pravin Dwivedi urged the new government to work on industrialization, good governance, and health care for all.
Nitish Kumar was sworn in as Chief Minister of Bihar for the seventh time in two decades.
