Buxar, Bihar:

A Dalit woman in Bihar’s Buxar district was allegedly gang-raped and her son died after they were attacked and dumped into a canal, police said.

The five-year-old boy drowned, authorities said, adding that one of the seven defendants was arrested in the case. Of the seven defendants, only two have been identified so far. The survivor has been admitted to a district hospital, some 135 km from Patna, for treatment.

“The woman’s medical examination is underway. An FIR (First Information Report) has been filed, while a defendant has been arrested. The boy’s body has been sent for autopsy,” said police officer KK Singh, quoted by ANI news agency.

“We are confirming other details of the case,” he added.

The incident comes amid growing outrage over crimes against women in the country after the brutal torture of a 20-year-old woman from Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, who died in a Delhi hospital last month.

On Sunday, the IWC recorded a case in the Hathras incident that reminded many of the 2012 gang rape in Delhi. The young woman was allegedly gang-raped and assaulted by four “upper caste” men from her village. His family will appear today in the Lucknow court of the Allahabad High Court.

India recorded an average of 87 cases of rape every day in 2019 and 4.05,861 cases of crimes against women during the year, an increase of more than seven percent from 2018, according to data released by the National Bureau of Criminal Records on last month.
