NEW DELHI: Having emerged as the NDA’s senior partner in Bihar for the first time in nearly two decades, the BJP finally appears to have emerged from the shadow of its allies in the state, but the new alliance arithmetic has dragged its overall vote down. share from 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
Taking advantage of the ‘Modi wave’ in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the National Democratic Alliance, which included LJP, had obtained more than 53 percent of the vote and had obtained 39 of the 40 seats.
In the Bihar assembly elections, LJP decided to compete on its own and has managed to win less than six percent of the vote, while HAM and VIP who were in the opposition camp have become part of the NDA.
According to the latest EC data, the combined voting share of the NDA, including that of BJP, JD (U), HAM and VIP, is less than 40 percent.
By comparison, the large opposition alliance led by RJD has won about 37 percent of the vote.
In terms of parties, JD (U) obtained 21.81 percent of the votes in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, but only obtained about 15 percent in the assembly elections. The BJP had obtained 23.58 percent of the vote in the general election and is now approaching 20 percent.
A similar trend was observed in the saffron party’s vote turnout in various state assembly elections that have taken place since the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
His percentage of votes was over 55% in Jharkhand and 58% in Haryana in the Lok Sabha elections. However, it plummeted to 33% and 36% respectively in the polls of the assemblies of these two states, which were carried out just months after the general elections.
This electoral result continues to gain importance for the BJP, as it is the second time after the 2019 general elections that the party alone or in alliance appears to be obtaining the majority.
