PATNA: The head of the Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM), Jitan Ram Manjhi, was elected leader of his four-member legislative party on Thursday.
The four newly elected MLAs met at the Manjhi residence, where they elected the former prime minister as the leader of the legislative group.
All were congratulated by the leaders of the pariahs and the workers present after the best performance of the party in an assembly election. Manjhi was the only HAM MLA in the outgoing assembly.
Later, speaking to journalists, Manjhi advised newly elected congressional legislators to join the NDA for the advancement of the state.
“Nitish Kumar’s development plans are not much different from those of Congress. Also, he has steered clear of many issues that are not of interest to the state. Therefore, you can join us at the NDA and contribute to development. from the state, “Manjhi said.
Apparently, he was hinting that Kumar was distancing himself from controversial topics like the temple of Ram in Ayodhya and the instant triple talaq.
Manjhi had started his political career with Congress in 1980. He later moved on to RJD and then to JD (U). He left the JD (U) after he was forced to resign to pave the way for Nitish Kumar’s return as Prime Minister and later formed the Hindustani Awam Morcha.
Kumar had resigned as prime minister in 2014 after taking moral responsibility for JD (U) ‘s poor performance in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, when only two of his candidates won, and installed Manjhi as CM. When Kumar wanted to get the chair back, a defiant Manjhi initially refused, but gave in to pressure.
Kumar facilitated his return to the NDA just before the assembly elections to counter another Dalit leader, Chirag Paswan, who left the ruling alliance in Bihar and went to meetings alone.
Manjhi’s party was given seven seats to compete out of JD (U) ‘s 122 quota, and the party did well by winning four.
The HAM leader said that he will not become a minister in the new government led by Nitish Kumar after being the prime minister.
